Barbara has always had it in the back of her mind that she would like to have to go at being a radio announcer. “One day I’ll do something about it, but somehow that day never comes. We lead such a busy life and there is so much one can get involved in, socially and working as a volunteer. One has to the make choices. One was my involvement with Vision Australia, reading local news from local newspapers. That also required some technical training, doing the taping which is then sent to Warrigal to be played over the airways on Friday nights. That’s where I was able to see volunteers at work for REG FM.”
Until one day there was an advertisement in the Advertiser asking for volunteers to work as announcers for our local community radio station FMK 105.5…. Apart from watching other volunteers at the station Barbara had NO experience, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. The station management gave her a trial and Barbara is now an accepted team member.
Barbara works every Thursday morning from 9.00 am to noon. She works off a
“song sheet” and the majority of what she says is scripted. Barbara tells us there is practically no ad-libbing.  All you hear her say is written in advance e.g. Community announcements, the weather, introducing the songs etc.
Barbara could also have her “own” show when she chooses, where she supplies and introduces the music. Even though there are still some requirements which are scripted, it would give her a lot more freedom as long as she sticks to the type of music that reflects the station’s policy.
At this point Barbara has not decided if she wants to do that as it would require a great deal of preparation time.

In the meantime tune in to BARBARA :
THURSDAYS from 9.00 am to NOON

As you will have noticed from the photos the premises need attention (probably an exaggeration) but  if everything goes to plan the land on which the station sits will be sub-divided into a River Views estate and the premises will be upgraded at the same time.

A bit about Community Radio :
In the 1970s, the Australian Government made a number of community broadcasting licences  available.

Over time the stations have been required to become self-funding, hence the advertisements. Our local station consists of a board of management, all volunteers; there are only two paid staff, the station manager and the sales manager.
At the time of writing the station’s website is under construction
