Marlay Point race 2010

Once again Michael Oakley has been good enough to give us a report on the race.

Thank you Michael

He used to sail most Marlays.

( Editors note : He is getting too old )

The race started with the threat of severe thunderstorm activity. There was thunder and lightning but no damaging wind. Most of the race was sailed in near calm conditions. During the race, some groups of yachts were totally becalmed whilst others had wind  The conditions led to an unusual finish with many slower division A yachts arriving at Paynesville in front of division C yachts which still had to do a lap of Raymond Island before finishing.

The attached pics show  the line honours winner 'Mad Max' passing Paynesville at 4:30 am with a lap of the Island still to go. Mad Max finished at approx 7am. Second was 'Indian Chief' crossing the line a little later. Indian Chief was formerly called 'Max' and won the race in 2008. Third over the line was a Thompson 8 monohull 'Rush' . The NZ built Thomsons were ahead of all the other multihulls, amazing! The last pic shows one of the competitive Division C yachts, an RL24 helmed by Brianna Collins who is the GLYC Sabre Dingy champion.

Marlay Point race 2009

This years race enjoyed perfect conditions.

With a stiff SW wind it was a spinnaker run most of the way and phenomenally fast. There was some moonlight but quite a bit of cloud so mostly very dark.

The entire fleet of 150 yachts started together at 7:45 pm and the big Grainger cat "Mad Max" finished at 11:28pm. That's the full course in just 3hrs 45mins!! Only seven minutes behind was the other big cat "Two Tribes" which won the multi-hull division (division M) on handicap.

The race doesn't go to Shaving Point any more just through McMillans Straight and round Raymond Island back to Paynesville. But it's still amazing to complete that distance in that time.

The fastest trimaran was a Farrier F82R "Redshift" which finished in 5hrs 34mins.

The fastest monohull (division D) a Thomson 8 "Rush" finished in 5hrs 30mins.

Division C (which we used to race in) saw a Spider 28 Mk4 "Kic" cross the line first in 6hrs 45mins. It was won on handicap by a Ross 650 "Frou Frou" .

There were no RL 28"s racing but an RL 24 DK "Ohau-rua" crossed the line 5th in Div C.

The two photo's attached are Div A (slowest) yachts, "Bite Me" a Gem 550 and "Waka 6" a TS16

Marlay Point 2008

Michael Oakley owns a RL28 and over the years has sailed about

18 “ Marlay Points “.

He sat this one out , but took some pictures

This is the Grainger Cat 'APC Max' which won overall line honours.

This is one of the two Thomson 8 yachts (built in NZ) which came in only minutes behind 'Max'

This is a Farrier Trimaran, 'Redshift' which finished in the middle of the multihull fleet but was a previous holder of fastest time for the race.

This shows the cat named 'Two Tribes' which was the second fastest multihull and crossed the line 30 mins behind APC Max and only just behind the two Thomson 8's.
