In the early years of Landcare, the Group set out to revegetate some of the open areas of manna gum by planting out seedlings.
I remember seeing Ken trying not to trip over his favourite plant, bracken, whilst assisting with the delivery of tubes to other members planting out.
As Ken recently said, "although only a few trees have survived the idea was right".
Then we launched into another project for controlling foxes and once again Ken was behind the organising and also in the work involved in setting baits and checking bait sites.  He was very proud of the results achieved.

The revegetation of the tip site became the next project and Ken was always there to assist and was not shy to carting buckets of water to the planted trees.  This is another successful ongoing project he enjoyed working on.

Ken spent a lot of time setting up for a public meeting on the manna gum trees dying and became very frustrated with not getting on with the job.  Fortunately this year he saw some of his work come to fruition with a koala count and dieback assessment being undertaken.

Back
Hi Peter,

Found the obituary I did for Ken.
At the time I was President of Landcare and enjoyed Ken’s commitment to the group’s projects.
We wouldn’t have the boardwalks if it wasn’t for Ken’s persistence. So next time you walk on it, give Ken a thought. Also find a letter from the Grants Commision to Ken.

Regards Andrew Bould

We thank Andrew for his contribution. It is with pleasure that we publish it. At this time when the Access Committee is doing so much work on our behalf it is appropriate that we reflect on the contribution made by Ken. If he were alive to-day he would be a member of this committee (of course) and his contributions would be sprinkled with a wicked sense of humour, including dashes of home spun philosophy. Telling others what to do ( he was very good at organizing ) He would then get his teeth into one particular issue and attack it with a determination that would guarantee success.

Ken Trenery 2003
Past President, Raymond Island Landcare Group

Ken was a foundation member of the Raymond Island Landcare Group and for nine years held the position of President and was always urging members to take on new projects or complete the ones under way.
Ken s heart was totally behind Landcare and without a doubt I would rate him as one of the keenest members we ve ever had.
As President, he wanted to see achievements to improve the environment of Raymond Island and was determined to succeed on all ventures.
Ken was also Vice President of the East Gippsland Landcare Network, Secretary of Raymond Island Protection, Committee Member of the Raymond Island Community Association and was instrumental in seeking extra funding for the ferry.
Another major project was to have a boardwalk built from the ferry north to Western Boulevard and a second boardwalk south from the ferry.  Once again Ken was behind the initial proposal and assisted where he could.
Ken s last project was to have the previous boardwalk extended south to Second Avenue and late last year undertook the task of completing a grant application, which the group was successful with.  I am pleased to say that now a planning application has been approved Ken s vision will soon become reality.

My memories of Ken includes our rabbit program whereby a professional ferreter came to the island and with Ken’s local knowledge and guidance, and after many hours and one lost ferret, no rabbits were caught.  Also, visions of Ken stuck in the mud while doing the monitoring of mosquito larvae and always so keen that the phone call to the person desired was done straight away, even if we weren’t sure what we wanted to discuss.

We all learnt not to call Ken on Saturday afternoons as he was ‘off to the races’ or listening to his favourite footy team ‘South Melbourne’ or dare we say Sydney Swans battle out a game.
Ken was open about his disabilities, but that never stopped him from being totally dedicated and committed to achieving projects for Landcare as he said, “I can’t do the heavy work but I’m very good at organising”.

One thing I would like to say is that Ken made many friends and living in Currawong Close placed both Ken and Kim in one of the closest communities of Raymond Island.
I always had a joke with Ken, and as we all know, Ken had many jokes for us!
Ken, and the group greatly miss Peter, and Ken gave a strong commitment to continue with many of Peter’s ideas and to have many projects accomplished.
With both Ken & Peter now organising Heaven’s Landcare I am sure that everything will be well organised by the time the rest of us get there.

On behalf of Landcare, we can look back with fond memories of a special member and take this opportunity to thank Kim and other Landcare members for being there for Ken.
