In the website’s pursuit of stories we meet some wonderful people.
Our first contact with the two islanders in this story was when they emailed us some photos of a family of Thorn Bills living on their property.
Our friendship with the two has blossomed since. I won’t mention their names as they may be embarrassed, also it gives me more freedom to talk about them.
(No doubt some will recognise them anyway)

This couple has lived on the island since ’97 but it is only in the last two years that they have moved to this place, their own very small part in paradise.
There are many islanders like these two who take their responsibility towards the land very seriously, but the lovely part is that these two present their views with such enthusiasm and such knowledge of the bush that we cannot help but be carried away with it. At no stage do they make us think that we should adopt anything they believe in.
In the two years they have lived here they have planted over 1000 trees, including non Island trees (for want of a better word) such as Platypus Gum and Eucalyptus Tooart. There are even some WA trees that were planted by the previous owners and are doing so well that our friends have added to them.
What impressed us most was the work they have put into “building“ understorey. There are photos of this, you can see they achieve two aims, one, it creates habitat for small birds, but it also acts as a barrier to protect young plants and grass from salt water spray.
Birds that have been seen since the barriers are Willie Wagtails, Striated Thorn Bills, Brown Gerrygones, Blue and Scrub Wrens, Yellow Rumped Thorn Bills and of course the obligatory Magpie Family. But also many of the Rosella species hang around.
Our friends certainly know all about creating soil for their veggie garden. It is fantastic, good enough to eat, and vegies are thriving. They have a flower show a landscape designer would be proud off. We noticed their Cinerarias. They would be a “flower hugger’s” dream.
I was then taken on a tour into the nearby bush and the importance of understorey was explained to me. Even though I was familiar with the concept, the detail and showing of examples was a new experience.
The website may feature more of their activities another time.
