Ron Mackenzie is known for his devotion to photographing our island's bird life.

Here is another of his contributions:
" I've been photographing Striated Pardalote at an Island nesting hollow, off & on, for about six years.
They are about half to two third the size of a sparrow, & help keep the trees healthy by feeding on lerps & etc., ex the leaves.
Because they are so small & usually live in the tree canopy, they are seldom seen.
They can have up to three broods in one season & this year they would have been feeding their third brood.
However, the13 m long branch that housed their hollow, was blown down, yesterday, by the strong easterly winds.
I doubt that the young would have survived the fall, probably indicated  by the fact that the parent birds were seen with food in their beaks, near the break.
Most nests are too high to photograph, so this one was special. One of the bird's characteristics is a red spot near it's wing elbow; another is that it displays to it's mate by slowly extending it's wings.
I've attached old shots of my rig, with wireless remote control, one of the bird in the nest hollow, to show the size of the hollow, one showing it's red spot & some taken taken this morning.

One shot, that I took some time ago, shows that the single spot is actually made up of about six or seven spots. "
