Plain Sailing for Planning Forum
For immediate release - Thursday, 7 June 2012
An East Gippsland Shire forum attended by about 60 residents of the
Paynesville district to discuss local issues and opportunities was well received
by community members, despite wild weather at the Gippsland Lakes Yacht
Club last Monday evening.
Attendees from Paynesville, Raymond Island, Eagle Point and Newlands Arm
had the opportunity to hear about local Shire projects and a report on
Paynesville policing needs, and then rolled up their sleeves to work through
over 80 local improvement opportunities to be included in the draft Paynesville
and District Community Plan.
Raymond Island was well represented, with two tables of residents putting the
Island community’s priorities forward - protection and management of
vegetation and wildlife, further improvements to the Ferry park and car park,
and other measures to protect and maintain the unique lifestyle of the Island
community.
After being entertained by local musicians Gerry Ciavarella, Pat Carroll,
Hepburn Davies and Meg Curtis-Parry, local community leaders, residents and
business people appreciated the information given and the opportunity to
contribute their ideas on priorities for the future.
Issues such as improved foreshore and boating facilities, environmental
improvements, walking and cycling facilities and stronger community
involvement in local decisions came to the fore.
Shire Councillors and staff were on hand to hear the community’s views on a
wide range of issues and these priorities will now be included in a draft
Community Plan for the district which will be circulated in the community for
further comment before being put to the Council for endorsement.
Local community leaders praised the Shire’s openness and willingness to listen
to community views.
Further information on the draft Plan will be available to all over coming weeks.
