The Raymond Island fund raiser for the flood victims
as told by Jack Holbrook
Brian Joshua was out in the big Smoke, (Bairnsdale) and saw people rattling tins for flood victims.   He thought what a good idea.   So on arrival back at base (the island) he went to Jill Johannsen and spoke to her about running a fund raiser using the sausages that were left over from the party in the park two weeks ago.  Jill also thought it was a good idea, so off went Brian, his next stop being Jack Holbrook’s home.   Jack agreed to help but due to it being late Friday afternoon and Brian wanting to run it Sunday, there wasn't a lot of time for organisation.t
Saturday morning off went Brian and Jack to the Bendigo Bank to get some tins to rattle, no joy there, all their tins were out.   Off went Brian and Jack to the Coast Guard who were happy to lend us some tins to rattle.   Next step was to arrange BBQs and helpers.   Calls at various locations on the Island resulted in numerous helpers and two BBQs.

Brian also spoke to Ian Lewis, the ferry operator, and asked could they have people on the ferry rattling tins.   As is the norm with Ian, there were no problems and Ian would supply shirts and caps etc for the helpers.   (What would we do without Ian?)
At 8.30 on Sunday morning Jack called into Brian's house to find Brian in tears. What's going on? Jack thought, only to find out that Brian was in the process of cutting up numerous onions for the sausage sizzle.   After Brian had wiped away those tears and bagged all the onions, off they went to set up.

The setting up turned out to be a dream, due to the number of helpers that turned out.   All things were go by 9.45 am with men cooking sausages, girls ready to shake those tins and serve customers.
Things ran very smoothly  and lots of fun was had talking to people, with the occasional burst from Jack abusing Brian for talking too long or taking too long to roll that smoke.
At 1.40pm things began to quieten and with only a few sausages left (about 9) things were packed up and the money count was started. Wine Justice, Paynesville added their collection to ours. Brian and Jack were blown away at the amount of money donated by the community of Raymond Island and travellers on the Ferry

We would like to record Barbara Van Maanen's sentiments expressed the day after the appeal :

" What happened yesterday was fantastic. Islanders are a great lot.. It is times like these that you realise what a special place Raymond Island is."
