The Beauty of Spring
Thornbills of Tea Tree Lane Raymond Island.
Story and Photos by Susie and Steve PULIS
We have a family of 8 Yellow-rumped Thornbills,(5 Adults & 3 new babies) who live on our property.
They are territorial little birds which live predominately in the Boobiallas (Myoporum Insulare) that are in abundance on our property.
The nest, however, is in a Giant Honey-myrtle (Melaleuca Armillaris).
Which is located just outside our backdoor.
We have been observing the Thornbills for quite awhile and watched the family very busily feeding 3 young. The Thornbills continually feed the young throughout the day never stopping. The whole family is involved it is a very busy affair. Five adults were responsible for the feeding of these 3 babies.
On the 23rd Of September 2010 we observed the 3 babies venture out of the nest for the first time.
The photos shown were taken by Steve . He is very keen bird observer and can spend hours watching all our local species.
We have an abundance of bird life on our property and in the surrounding areas.

There is a close up photo of the Thornbills nest. The small hole is the entrance to the nest. It is well hidden in the Armillaris, but only about a metre of the ground in the lower branches, it is truly amazing how they construct it.
