Planting mannas near Twelfth and Fifth

The last planting attracted 13 volunteers and we finished the working bee with a morning tea hosted by Bernadette and Glenn Williams.

We have now planted about 50  mannas in that area. Bernadette and Glenn spend a lot of time looking after the plants.

The young trees  are wire-protected and companion plants have been indentified by stakes with yellow steamers to protect them from accidental damage.

Some of the trees have been planted less than 12 months and are doing very well.

It is planned to plant more trees in that area.

As previously reported we received a grant to fence of an area east of the former tip.
Slashing and fencing contractors have been booked and work will begin in the new year. The area for the new fence has already been slashed.
It is then planned to plant the whole area with mannas.

This has taken quite a bit of time.
Some months ago a lot of slashing was done and trees were planted, but during the wetter that normal season the bracken got away from us and we are poisoning and slashing. Once we have some sort of control over the bracken we will plant mannas again. The whole process will take longer than anticipated.
One of the great discoveries we have made is that where we slashed, undergrowth is prolific. That is a heartening sight.
Where we now poison we put buckets over the young plants to protect them. We are using “ Brush-off “and wearing protective gear.

                                                                   Dec.2011
We have been very lucky that the rains have given this garden a good start.
Recently we had nine people who spent about two hours (inc. morning coffee) planting 300 natives, weeding the beds and painting the tables and seats in the barbecue shelter.
Some beds are really looking good. Others need more plants.
Landcare is happy to continue to donate plants and are always on the look-out at the nurseries .
We may well need to plant another 600 to 800 plants but that decision will be made next spring.

Note the changes from July to Dec

The six photos below reflect recent activity. We decided that many of the four year old manna gums needed staking.  The slashing was done by two volunteers ( one so old that he only volunteered providing he could sit on the mower/slasher ,nicknamed 'Predator' )
About 50 mannas have been planted. There is still enough cleared area for another 20 to 30. Then some more slashing needs to be done.
During July Les Bradd is volunteering to slash the OLD TIP site and mannas will also go in there.
